The 454 Crusader , the heart of the MC

The 7.4-liter 454 V8 Crusader marine engine is one of the most respected big-block inboard powerplants of the late 20th century, known for its strength, smoothness, and exceptional torque on the water. Built from the foundation of Chevrolet’s legendary 454 big-block, Crusader re-engineered the engine specifically for marine duty, focusing on durability, cooling efficiency, and reliable power delivery. For many boaters, the 454 Crusader became the gold standard for powering cabin cruisers, sport boats, ski boats, and midsize yachts throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

At its core, the Crusader 454 uses the rugged GM Mark IV big-block architecture with a 4.25-inch bore and 4.00-inch stroke. This gives the engine a displacement of 7.4 liters, producing massive low-end torque—exactly what a heavy boat needs to get on plane quickly or maintain speed in rough water.
